Why Academic Papers Are A Terrible Discussion Forum (and why, therefore, SS is!?) from The Rationalist Conspiracy

I agree with this analysis, actually..
Whenever I think about how awful the manual therapy chasm is, how deep, I dread to think of how much deeper it would be if we only had academic papering to help us climb out of it or move across it.

1. The time lag is huge; it’s measured in months, or even years.
2. Most academic publications are inaccessible outside universities.
3. Virtually no one reads most academic publications.
4. It’s very unusual to make successful philosophical arguments in paper form.
5. Papers don’t have prestige outside a narrow subset of society.
6. Getting people to read papers is difficult.
7. Academia selects for conformity.
8. Papers have a tradition of violating the bottom line rule.
9. Academic moderation is both very strict and badly run.

In broad bush strokes I concur and am equally frustrated with the academic process and much of what is published as "research". However I would add the caveat that without it we are as equally stuck in authority, guru led nonsense and mythology. We need to be very careful we do not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Do the things we have proof for. Stop doing the things for which we have no evidence of clinical or cost effectiveness.
But, nobody listens. They’re all too busy!!

Ohmygosh ANdy, I agree!.. the point being made was that academic paperage/discussion moves too slowly all by itself. Forums (like this one!) that can discuss it, among other things, can speed up the consensus making required to move things forward faster, including debunkification of all nonsense.

No disagreement from me Diane just scoring the underline we should not abandon research but certainly refine it. If I get the chance/time/energy I will post a recent article from the sports science community which speaks to this - but it isn't electronic as yet.

There is of course Ionnides although his treatise is badly mistreated by all sorts of miscreants
