Hello,
My name is Yiannis Sotiralis. I am a PT for 13 years on Private Practice. Certified McKenzie method practitioner and also in biomedical acupuncture. I am very thrilled about the neuroscience applications in physical therapy practice and also the neurodynamic approach in specific clinical manifestations..

Here in Porto, North Portugal, there are some people in the physical therapy and some medical doctor ("Physiatras" , medical doctors in Portugal specialised in physical therapy) who did neuroscience applications in practice and use neurodynamic to treat many health conditions.
Schacklock was for a course for years in North Portugal, and in hospital some neurodynamics seminars have been organised
My curiosity and my question to you, if I may ask, is what is the situation in Athens regarding to neurodynamics and neuroscience applications in manual therapy.

I wonder if you could tell us (OK, me.., I'm curious!) a bit about how PT in Greece works; maybe the whole health care set-up.
1. Do you have direct access or do you treat by MD referral only?
2. Are there private practices in Greece?
3. What has the recent economic trouble meant for PT in your country?

I am very happy to meet you all. There are many questions and i will try to answer as many as i can. We had seminars of neurodynamic approach over the years in Greece from 1993-94. David butler, Michael Shacklock, and Lorimer Moseley have been here but not in continuous and organized matter. This was the spark i think and some of us started to be very interested about it. Also colleagues came back to Greece when they finished their studies in Australia and England carrying whith them the seeds of the new thinking. Neuroscience applications are a little bit behind i think, and these days some of us trying to inform others that there is something out there worth to know about it. We are keeping a very close look on articles and clinical implications and trying to inspire others to do so.
The other question was about direct referral. No, in Greece we don't have direct referral but these days we managed to change the old ''system'' where the doctor had to prescript the exact physical therapy scheme to be followed (no one was keeping it anyway). Now the prescription will direct to Physical Therapy and if the Doctor wishes, can be more specific but this is not obligatory.In Greece the level of Physical therapy is higher in private practice and unfortunately lower in hospitals.
With the crisis thinks are pretty unstable at this time and i think that some physical therapists in private practice will have a lot to loose. This economic failure has a wider perspective and sincerely i don't know where its going to end... I ll be happy to answer any other question you may have and i am sorry about my English writing..

Diane approximately we are 6000. From them about 3500 are in private practice.

Just to be clear when i said that we don't have direct referral in Greece i meant it in relation with insurance policies. As a patient you can visit a PT and start Physical therapy but only if you have a private health insurance will pay for you therapy. Otherwise the patient will pay from his pocket. To get covered by the national health care insurance system you will need the prescription from the doctor as i described it before.
